Solo but Secure

Women’s Safety & Confidence in the Outdoors

Women’s hesitation to venture out alone can limit their access to the restorative power of nature.

This micro-training equips women to (a) understand real vs. perceived risks, (b) teach evidence-based safety strategies, and (c) integrate confidence-building practices into nature-informed programming for clients and participants.

Join us for a two-part lunch-and-learn that tackles real risks, dismantles limiting myths, and equips you with actionable safety plans and self-defense tools. Whether you guide clients, run groups, or love solo hiking or camping yourself, you’ll walk away ready to help more women claim their rightful place on the trail—secure, prepared, and empowered.

Dr. Heidi-Schreiber-Pan is an internationally recognized anxiety- and grief-specialist, therapist, author, and public speaker. Founder of Chesapeake Mental Health Collaborative (CMCH) and the visionary behind the Center for Nature Informed Therapy (CNIT), she leads strategy and clinical integrity while championing nature-informed mental-health worldwide.

Tori Garten has close to 20 years experience teaching women and children self-defense based on the martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. She was drawn to learning self-defense so that she could feel safe while training for a triathlon out on the trails alone. She couldn't always find someone with the same availability to train, and it bothered her to be confined by the thought "its not safe for women to be outdoors - alone".

She went on her first "big" trip to raft the Kongakut River in Alaska. Since then she has been saying "yes" to adventure, bike packing the GAP and C&O alone, hiking the Kalalau trail, starting of the beginning with family, the rest by herself. She's canoed the northern most navigable river in North American, kayaked from island to island off the coast of Maine, rafted the Grand Canyon, and is rafting the Firth River this summer.

In 2021 Tori took up leading kayak tours, hikes and teaching kids to bike, combining her love for teaching, community, connection and nature.

2025 sees Tori leaning into the great outdoors, starting her own adventure company Two Owls Outdoor Adventures, while continuing to teach self-defense/BJJ at Hi-Tech Rising Tide and running self-defense workshops through her other company The Awareness Connection. She is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a certified Wilderness First Responder.
